条件状语从句 “If”

今天来谈谈 If 从句的其中一种使用方法，即用来表达过去某事有可能发生，但最终并没有。

“ 如果当时怎么怎么的，这个事情就会如何如何”； 表达说话者本身的一种推测。在这种情况下，if 从句后面的动词必须要使用过去完成时，而主句则要用到情态动词 would 或者 could.

一个很常见的错误就是，if 从句后没有使用过去完成时，而使用了 didn’t. 以下例子若干：

1. 如果 Dave Roberts 没有成功盗取二垒会怎样？

错误: What If Dave Roberts Didn’t Steal 2nd Base?

正确 : What If Dave Roberts Hadn’t Stolen 2nd Base?

Dave Roberts 是一名棒球运动员，这里讨论的是一场经典棒球赛。

2. 如果这事情没有发生，那么她很有可能会活到90岁。

错误: She probably would have lived to 90 if this didn’t happen.

正确: She probably would have lived to 90 if this hadn’t happened.

3. 但试想一下如果我没能通过我的工作获得健康保险会如何。

错误: But imagine if I didn’t have access to health insurance through my job.

正确 : But imagine if I hadn’t had access to health insurance through my job.

4. 要是Brian Epstein没有死而John Lennon也没有遇上Yoko Ono, 那么Beatles乐队是不是就不会解

散了？

错误: If Brian Epstein didn’t die and if John Lennon didn’t meet Yoko Ono, would the Beatles have

stayed together?

正确 : If Brian Epstein hadn’t died and if John Lennon hadn’t met Yoko Ono, would the Beatles

have stayed together?

注：Brian Epstein 是 Beatles当时的经理人。

5. 如果泰坦尼克号没有沉船会发生什么事？

错误: What would have happened if the Titanic didn’t sink?

正确: What would have happened if the Titanic hadn’t sunk?
