艾易艾斯(aeas)阅读技巧(七) 明辨容易混淆的单词
在艾易艾斯(aeas)阅读考试中,只因为这些相似词汇混淆,才没把文章彻底理解或者理解错误!
1. clench / clinch
You clench your fist or teeth, but clinch a deal or a victory.
Clench: 握紧. vt.
Alex clenched her fists and gritted her teeth.
亚丽克斯握紧拳头,咬紧牙。
Clinch 解决,赢得. vt.
Evidently this information clinched the matter.
显然这一信息解决了这个问题。
2. compliment / complement
这两个词都可以做动词或者名词; A compliment 是一番恭维的话; a complement 是一种补充,加强。动词方面,To compliment 是表扬,to complement 是去补充,衬托。
You can do no harm by paying a woman compliments.
对女人讲恭维话不会有什么害处。
Nutmeg, parsley and cider all complement the flavour of these beans well.
肉豆蔻、欧芹和苹果酒都凸显这些菜豆的味道。
3. conscience / conscious
Conscience 是名词,意指良心。 Conscious 是形容词,意思是有意识的。
What if he got a guilty conscience and brought it back?
如果他问心有愧把它带回来呢?
She was very conscious of Max studying her.
她十分清楚马克斯在仔细端详着她。
4. denote / connote
Denote 意思是表示,指示,类似“to indicate”;
Red eyes denote strain and fatigue.
眼睛发红显示紧张和疲劳。
Connote 含有言外之意,意思是意味着,类似“to imply”;
Words like Mother and home connote warmth and comfort.
诸如母亲,家这类型的单词蕴含着温暖和舒适。
5. deserts / desserts
desert 是沙漠 n., 抛弃 vt.
Mrs. Roding’s husband deserted her years ago.
罗丁太太的丈夫数年前抛弃了她。
dessert 是甜品 n.
She had homemade ice cream for dessert.
她吃了些自制冰淇淋当餐后甜点。
