The movement of people from agricultural areas to cities to work can cause serious problems in both places. What are the serious problems and what measures can be taken to solve this problem?城市发展类

  • Life in cities has its drawbacks:
  • The cost of living is higher than in rural areas.
  • Housing is usually much more expensive.
  • Homelessness and poverty are common in cities.
  • There is a gap between the rich and poor.
  • Life in cities can be extremely stressful.
  • There are problems like traffic congestion and crime.
  • Cities lack a sense of community.
  • People do not even know their neighbours.
  • Cities are sometimes described as “concrete jungles”.
  • Rubbish issues

Today’s urbanization means that major cities are developing into the countryside nearby and the country population are living in the cities. The marked increase in city population subsequently requires a rise in accomodation within cities. As it is impossible to increase the number of apartments or units, then housing in cities is usually much more expensive than ever before.
We are producing more rubbish on a daily basis because we consume more than families did in the past. In the densely-populated city areas, there is a tremendous amount of waste produced , and this seriously threatens the environment we are living in.
One possibility that is sometimes suggested is to encourage young workers to live in suburbs rather than living in cities. This would reduce the number of city dwellers and eventually eliminate the accommodation pressure caused.
Another solution to this is through raising awareness in the general public. If everyone were fully aware of the consequences of producing much rubbish detrimental to the environment, then they would probably make a halt, saving it from being poisoned.

1 Some people believe the range of technology available to individuals today is increasing the gap between poor people and rich people. Others think it is having an opposite effect. What is your opinion?

Rich people in developed countries have smartphones, laptops, wireless broadband Internet etc. (A) They can now work from home or from anywhere in the world. They can do their shopping online and have things delivered to their homes.(B) Their quality of life is significantly improved via using the technology inaccessible to the poor(.C)
A second way that technology may widen the gap is that the poor cannot make the best of high technology and be educated further. Unlike the wealthy, poor populations in some countries are typically suffering from the lack of technological skills, and are financially unable to have equipment, such as computers. They cannot ,like average people, feel free to access higher education  which often requires applicants to have certain levels of computer knowledge and be at least computer literate before entering.
On the other hand, it may sometimes be argued the opposite way. There are various other factors, such as inequality of education, distribution of resources, taxation systems that may mainly contribute to the imbalance between the rich and the poor. Focusing on the application of technology is too narrow an approach to this issue given its complexity(考虑到它的复杂性).

2 Students at schools and universities learn far more from lessons with teachers than from others sources (such as the internet, television). To what extent do you agree or disagree?

As well as academic performance, moral values and appropriate behavior are equally important throughout an individual’s years of education. Education about these moral levels and correcting a student’s misbehavior usually require everyday interaction with  continued guidance Impersonal technology, such as the Internet or television is unable to replace the face-to-face contact happening in real classrooms and thus cannot be as effective as teachers in educating students to behave properly .
In today’s world, academic qualifications are essential in developing a reasonable career and a graduate can hardly enter higher education or eventually get a good job without being academically qualified. Teachers who are professionally trained with required skills and academic knowledge are quite able to impart academic theories and to help develop students faster academically. , and it is this ability that exceeds electric devices and may be some justification for the important role teachers play in academics.
Our adult world is changing constantly in terms of technology and the Internet is the key to all the knowledge and information available throughout the world. Therefore, it is important that young people should gain exposure to the Internet or watch television , as they can learn the wider range of knowledge by watching discoveries, for example on television or getting online than from teachers.

3 Today, people can work and live in anywhere they want, because of the improvement of communication technology and transport. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Today’s fast-paced lifestyle and stressful working conditions mean that there is serious decline in the levels of life quality. One of the best ways to tackle this is through moving to a quiet place perhaps far in suburbs and relaxing well in the home after long hours of work. Improved transport systems allow a person to make such movement and commute to or from work within a relatively short period despite the long distances.
The widespread use of computers and the Internet enables some workers to work at home rather than travelling to the workplace. They can undertake tasks and cope with issues at work by communicating with colleagues via the Internet , and this is less time-consuming and quite effective  as they do not need to spend time on long journeys or waiting for the co-workers

to attend the meeting.

Traffic congestion may be one of the problems caused by this development. Those who do not live in cities often choose to drive to work , , and the increase in the number of private cars will lead to the roads becoming rather crowded especially within rush hours.
Work is a human activity and it works best with as much interaction as possible.   Impersonal technology cannot replace face-to-face contact found in traditional offices or the workplace.

4 Some think that environmental problems are too big for individuals to solve, while others think that these problems cannot be solved unless individuals make some action. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Environmental problems tend to be complex and often happen at a global scale, which requires long-term research, a large amount of fund, expertise, advanced technologies or even collaboration between governments When facing these challenges, people may think the individual efforts are too trivial to make any difference Thus making no personal efforts in changing life habits, which can be difficult to alternate once they are developed.
Besides awareness, to make behavioral change on a personal level, access to facilities and knowledge of what and how to is also crucial. In many communities, facilities and services that promote a sustainable lifestyle (recycling, PT) are insufficient, underfunded or poorly maintained. It is inconvenient or requires more commitment (people to go out of their way) from the public to make a difference, resulting in a resistant attitude among the public.
The increase in environmental pollution is mainly a result of our production of rubbish and our tendency to use something once and throw it away. The best way to reduce the waste is to raise the awareness in the general public. Children and adults need to be educated about how important their personal efforts can be in saving our clean world. Nobody wants to see our valuable resources used up and our planet poisoned.

解决方法:

Launch media campaigns that establish the link between the environmental problems and individuals People start to understand how each individual is responsible to maintain a healthy planet earth and how collective efforts, consisted by small steps of individual contribution, can lead to significant social change They are more likely to make personal efforts and commit to this shared mission
Governments need to invest more in building facilities and providing services that help to improve the environment When such facilities and services are more accessible and requires little efforts for people to carry out tasks (recycling bins at home, reliable public TP system) People are more willing to follow the steps and change their habits

5 Some think that children should start school as early as possible, while others believe that they should start school at the age of seven. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Schools have teaching facilities, resources (books, games) and professionally trained teachers Attending school early, have early access to these resources, start learning symmetrically from an early age Acquire more knowledge and develop better skills, earn a competitive edge among peers
Schools provide an environment where students are closely monitored. They have the op to interact with others from different age groups and backgrounds Those who go to school early can learn how to share, negotiate, collaborate with others in school activities Develop their social skills, communication skills, get along well with others later
The time children, especially young ones, spend with parents in their early developmental stages is crucial to how secure and confident they feel in later years. Attending schools at 7 ensures that children get to spend sufficient amount of quality time with parents who can provide them with emotional support and guidance Strengthen family bond and beneficial to their emotional development

Children at 7 tend to be more emotionally, intellectually and socially mature Those who attend school at 7 have the self-discipline and management skills to adapt to schools’ face-paced routine and structured learning. Able to grasp complex concepts better. More motivated to learn, learning becomes more effective.

6 Some people believe that improving public health should increase the number of sports facilities; others believe that it has little effects and need other measures to improve it. Discuss both views and give your opinion. tutorial课上范文

7 Some people think music plays an important role in society. Others think it is simply a form of entertainment. Discuss both sides of this argument and give your own opinion.

The most common way one could involve himself or herself with music is by listening to or attending a concert. This is an experience that people can and do enjoy and satisfy themselves in an artistic way. Music is also important because a concert venue creates a unique experience one can hardly find in any other place.
Today’s fast-paced lifestyle and stressful working conditions mean that we do not have the time to sit down to a proper way of relaxation. Therefore, it is important that some kind of music becomes an important part of our life, ,as it is usually thought of as an effective way of releasing pressure, be it from work or life chores.
The main concern is about the type of music that a person is exposed to. Many individuals keep listening to cheap music , for example, pop music online which tends to have instant ear appeal, have melodies, preferably well-known and recognisable, and clever orchestrations, contrived to deliver maximum impact. The listeners of such music are simply being attracted by the designed effects, thus simply being superficially entertained rather than learning from the experience.

8 Some people suggest that a country should try to produce all the food for its population and import as little food as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Due to its unique climatic and soil condition, every country has its own specialised and seasonal agricultural products. Without food import, in addition to locally produced foods, consumers would have no access to a variety of meat, produce and packaged goods from around the world. Also the country is susceptible to food shortage caused by poor harvest. They miss out on the choice benefits brought by a global food market, also the country may suffer from seasonal shortages,
Shipping food over great distances uses a tremendous amount of fuel (cars, boats, trucks) By only eating locally produced food, carbon food print is reduced. It is sustainable and more eco-friendly.
Also to keep food fresh during the transport, they are often picked before being ripe enough and chemicals are used to slow down the rotting process. Eating local produce helps to reduce health risks. Also, consumers are clear of where the food comes from, how it is grown and under what standards they are tested and processed. More guaranteed in terms of food safety.
Although imported goods are subject to the same health and safety requirements as domestically produced foods, government does not have the same ability to inspect factories, farms and processing plants, as it would with domestically produced foods. Consumers have little clue of how the food is produced (e.g. how much pesticides were used and whether it is GM)

9 If a product is good or it meets people needs, people will buy it. So advertising is unnecessary and no more than an entertainment. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Good advertisements are to inform customers about the newest products, the functions and the price range. Exposure to these advertisements enables consumers to obtain useful information and make informed decision based on own needs. This is necessary as many consumers may regret making that purchase after they occasionally encounter advertising on other products.
The majority of consumers prefer to consume both quality and affordable products and these products will often become soon popular among consumers. Advertisements on these products can facilitate them to become more popular in the general public, , and there is an advantage if more people can benefit from the popular and quality goods and companies can thus produce large profits because of this.
Of course, it is true that the lines between advertising and entertainment are blurred. As the competition for viewers increases, then the quality of film and video production has also improved, and producers and brands alike seek to attract more potential clients. The best way to achieve this is through making the images and videos interesting and entertaining, so the trend that advertisements , as it is stated, become more recreational is inevitable.

10 Some people believe that teenagers should concentrate on all school subjects. But, others believe that teenagers should focus on the subject that they are best at or that they find the most interest.  Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Some subjects are essential for children to cope with everyday problems, such as Mathematics and English. Despite the probably low level of interest, these subjects need to be learned simply to develop the required skills necessary in their later life.
At secondary school, a teenager needs to decide which subjects they would like to study in-depth for their university time. Therefore, it is advisable for adolescents to study more subjects gaining some basic knowledge before being able to make such decision.
A learner needs to be interested in whatever they learn and thus feel their study life to be both attractive and productive. If they can work on their favorite subjects, then they are more willing to apply themselves and work hard at school and this will have a positive effect on how they learn.

11 Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) are the main sources in many countries, but in some countries the use of alternative sources of energy (wind energy and solar energy) are encouraged. To what extent do you think it is a positive or negative development?

Perhaps, the greatest danger facing our world today is a combination of global warming and the greenhouse effect. The danger is caused partly by burning fossil fuels which leads to our polluted atmosphere. Cleaner sources of energy, such as wind or solar energy, are much greener alternatives which do not have such negative effects.
Research has highlighted that a sizable minority of countries have suffered from the risk of fossil fuels being used up and complained about the energy crisis they are in. Alternative sources of energy, as we all know, are infinite and inexhaustible, , and the widespread use of them can save from this pressing crisis these disadvantaged countries which have relied on traditional energy for years.
It is important to remember that the facilities required to process and use new energies often come at a substantial cost and many governments are financially unable to take action. Fossil fuels are available all over the world and the methods to extract energy from them are also not that expensive. All these factors may be some justification for the reason why many governments in developing countries still have to depend on the affordable fuels.

12 Some believe that those who are not talented in language learning should not be required to learn a foreign language. Do you think school should require students to learn a foreign language?

Education systems are based on the belief that a person can be taught particular skills, including those associated with language learning.   So from our own school experience, we can find plenty of evidence to support the view that all individuals can manage to acquire these skills at school with continued teaching and guided practice.
Research, relating to linguistics, has highlighted that language acquisition mainly relies on the level of dedication the learners make to repeating and imitating rather on inherited talent.   Such efforts facilitate a language to be learned and eventually be use, so the term “talent” is not a determining issue.
Of course, talent makes language learning more attractive and productive. A learner needs to feel they are making progress and perform better than their peers, , and as talent gives them a facility for the skills that allow them to excel, then they are more likely to keep motivated and effective.

13 Developing countries require international organizations’ help. Some people think that financial aid is important. However, others believe that practical aid and advice is more important. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

In some developing counties, the primary reason for becoming impoverished is perhaps epidemic diseases, sudden natural disaster or in debt. It is extremely difficult for the governments to divert a large proportion of already tight budget to cope with the imminent issues. In this case, financial aid from international organizations is of paramount importance as it brings direct benefit to the governments affected.
Education is thought to be one of the first priorities for a country, and a great proportion of underdeveloped countries suffer from insufficient educational resources, such as professionally-trained teachers or suggestions on building up structured education provided to the young students. If economically developed countries can provide aid relevant to education rather than simply offering financial support, then not only can the young students benefit from the practical provision but the local educational establishments can also  be improved because of this. Without such particular help or advice, there may not be immediate change in the level of local education structure as any other form of aids may not produce such direct effect.
In developing countries, lack of transparency and an ineffective management system have enabled prevalent corruption in the governments.   It is therefore likely that monetary support from other countries would bring about benefits to only government officials instead of the poor who mostly need it.

14 The subjects and lesson contents for children are decided by the authorities, such as central government. Some people think that teachers should decide these for students. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

There are good grounds for arguing that authorities should decide the specific subjects young children should study. One is that they can make more informed decision. The state has access to all the latest educational research and experts in educational professions. Therefore, it is much easier for governments to make better decisions than individual teachers can.
In today’s job market, with the marked increase in unemployment, there are constant changes in the requirements for new graduates, , and I think, it is the state’s responsibility to spot these changes and prepare them better for future careers by making compulsory subjects catering for current employment situations.
Those who argue that teachers should be involved in choosing lesson contents they deliver also make one of two arguments. First among these is the increased level of motivation with study. A learner needs to be interested in whatever they learn and thus feel their study life to be both attractive and productive. As teachers know students better and keep clear perspectives in what contents may mostly interest students, then the subjects they choose are more likely to encourage a student to become effective and motivated learners.
It can also be argued that everyone should have the right to choose whatever subjects at school , and as children are too young to make this decision, it is understandable that their teachers take their role in this context.

15 Some people think family members have stronger influence on children than teachers and friends. Do you agree?

In any society, the individual must learn to respect others and obey rules of society. Educating children to understand the need to do these often begins in the home , and is thus thought of as the responsibility of family.
The time children, especially young ones, spend with parents in their early developmental stages is crucial to how secure and confident they feel in later years. Those children who have had quality time with their parents tend to become more independent and confident in later life than others who grow up without family’ love and attention.
On the other hand, those in favor of teachers and friends also make one of two arguments. One is that children develop faster socially once they enter the real community. When a child gets to school age, they experience working and living with other people from a whole variety of backgrounds from the wider society. This experience encourages them to learn how to interact, and then communicate with many different people from an early age, which cannot be provided by simply staying at home.
It can also be argued that a child who just stays at home with their parents are rather restricted in terms of academic knowledge and experience of the world , and those attending school, begin to learn academics from their professionally-trained teachers and benefit from the structured education systems at school.

16 Nowadays, we rely on news for our knowledge, but we are uncertain about the truth of these news. Should we believe journalists? What qualities should a good journalist or correspondent have?

With the development of communication technology such as the Internet, social media and smart phones, journalism has become a low-entry market where people no longer need certain qualification to call themselves a journalist. The content written by these so called ‘citizen journalists’ lacks fact check. Besides, these journalists do not have the skills and background knowledge to present stories objectively, nor the time as full time journalists to investigate issues in depth Audience needs to have a critical approach to such content and not believe completely in what is written, find multiple sources to get to the truth
Also, media world is highly competitive (esp online). To stand out among all agencies and fight over audience’s limited attention Many journalists choose to over-sensationalise and exaggerate or even distort facts (e.g. they may crop pictures in a certain way to make stories more aggressive, to create staged conflicts, to imply tension unnecessarily) The stories written in this way are biased and misleading
There are reputable news sources with professionally trained journalists (BBC, CNN) They follow code of ethics and dedicate time and efforts chasing credible sources and digging facts. News written by them are reliable and trustworthy
