英语里，词汇的使用总是很让人迷糊，尤其在长得差不多的词汇中很容易把他们混淆，感觉都相差不大。很多时候词汇的用法并无道理可讲，更多的是一种相约成俗的习惯，小时候的老师把这叫做固定搭配。因此这方面的知识只能靠慢慢积累。今天以几个实例告诉大家，不只是咱们学习英语的人模糊，哪怕老外自己，也还是没完全弄明白这个问题。

1. vane / vain / vein

Vane. n. 叶片

A vane is a flat blade that pushes or is pushed by wind or water.

Vane就是随风或者随波荡漾的叶片。

Vain. adj. 徒劳的

The drafting committee worked through the night in a vain attempt to finish on schedule.

起草委员会徒劳地通宵工作想按期完成工作。

vein.n.静脉

Many veins are found just under the skin.

许多静脉就在皮肤下面。

2. venal / venial

Venal.adj.贪污的

Ian Trimmer is corrupt and thoroughly venal.

伊恩·特里默贪污受贿，唯利是图到了极点。

Venial.adj. 可原谅的

a venial error 可原谅的小错

3. vicious / viscous

vicious. adj. 恶毒的

He was a cruel and vicious man.

他是一个残忍而凶恶的人。

viscous.adj. 粘稠的

A viscous liquid is thick and sticky.

粘液就是又厚又粘。

4. wave / waive

wave. n. 波浪

Steve stopped him with a wave of the hand.

史蒂夫把手一挥，制止了他。

waive. vt. 放置，搁置

The art gallery waives admission charges on Sundays.

美术馆星期天免费开放。

5. weather / whether

weather.n. 天气

The weather was bad.

天气恶劣。

whether.conj.是否

Whether it turns out to be a good idea or a bad idea, we’ll find out.
