1. disinterested / uninterested
disinterested 和 uninterested 看起来都像是 interested (有兴趣的)的否定形式,而且经常能在别人演讲中听到,那么,两者间有什么区别呢?
disinterested 公正无私. adj.
Justice Strausse is disinterested.
Strausse大法官是公正无私的。
uninterested 没有兴趣. adj.
Students are uninterested in schoolbooks.
学生们对教材没有兴趣。
2. discreet / discrete
discreet 谨慎的,小心的 adj.
They were gossipy and not always discreet.
他们爱说闲话,而且不总是言语谨慎。
discrete 断续的 adj.
a discrete line / a continuous line
断续的线/连续的线
3. economic / economical
economic 和 economical 都是形容词,两者也非常常见。economic 与经济学或则经济体相关,是经济学术语。而economical 是指某东西很实惠。
economic 经济上的. adj.
Poland’s radical economic reforms.
…波兰激进的经济改革。
Economica 实惠的,划算的. adj.
plans to trade in their car for something smaller and more economical.
…用他们的车抵价购买更小且更经济型轿车的计划
4. ensure / insure
ensure 确保. vt.
We must ensure that all patients have access to high quality care.
我们必须确保所有的病人都能够得到高质量的护理。
insure 投保,保障 (保险方面). vt.
For protection against unforeseen emergencies, you insure your house, your furnishings and your car.
为防止发生无法预料的紧急情况,人们给房屋、家具和汽车投保。
5. envelop / envelope
这两个词只差了一个字母e,非常容易搞混, 而它们的词性是不同的。
envelop. 包围. vt.
That lovely, rich fragrant smell of the forest enveloped us.
森林那种美妙、馥郁的香气笼罩了我们
envelope. 信封. n.
Address of the receipt should be written clearly on the envelope.
收件人地址应清晰地写在信封上。
